[JAWSLite] Re: jaws, java and Amazon

The Java Access Bridge is for anyone who's using a screen reader and going to try use a Java application which has been coded to Java's accessibility standards. Not every Java application will be accessible though, even with the Java Access Bridge. Open Office is a Java application, but even with the Java Access Bridge, I don't find it particularly usable. People have also reported that they've experienced performance problems with amazon.com and that installing the Java Access Bridge has resolved this problem.

R A- No, I was referring to something posted several months ago. He said that every time you update JRE, you need to re-install the access bridge. I've been doing that, installing over the top, and so far that appears to work- without anny un-installing of the access bridge.

Sorry if that was what you took from my earlier posting

You only uninstall it if you want to return to the originally installed version of the access bridge.

Steve- Sorry I'm late here- have been out of the office for a few days.

Another list member previously stated that it is necessary to re-install the access bridge evry time you update JAVA JRE.

To tell if the bridge is working, go to control panel, launch JAVA, then tab and see if the controls are being read to you. HTH

Steve

After you install don't do the updates

To turn off updates go into your control panel, hit the letter J for Java
and press the enter key.

You should land on a general tab. Arrow right once to updates. Tab once
and you should hear automatically update. Uncheck the box and then tab to
the ok button.

You need the Java JRE

You must uninstall the access bridge before you install JRE.

Then Install the JRE and then install the access bridge.

Link to JRE latest version

http://java.sun.com/products/archive/j2se/5.0_13/index.html

Select to 'Download JRE', with the file name being

jre-1_5_0_13-windows-i586-p.exe

Hope this helps

Steve, perhaps I was too hasty with my last response. I see that I do
have
Java Run Time installed on my system. Did you do a Windows-f system
search
for "java run" to make sure you don't have it installed?

well the web page is still slugish. I wonder why?

okay I downloaded the access bridge. I installed it and restarted the
computer. I don't have the java run time installed what ever that is. Do
I
need that and do I have to do anything else to activate the bridge?

I just went to Amazon looking for something. I noticed that jaws didn't
read
anything when I pushed the up and down arrow. Or at least the response
was
very slow. Have they made any changes requiring this java access bridge?

Hi, Jean. I didn't download the manuals, and so far have felt no need of
additional information.

Thanks Adrian,

I hadn't ben following that thread and didn't know about Access Bridge
until
now. I'll install it and see if it helps Jaws. I notice on the download
page
there are manuals, etc. I assume that's not necessary as an end user?

Thanks for providing the direct link. Jean

I want to thank Don Mauck for this suggestion. Earlier, I'd read on this
list that Java might be at the root of my sudden difficulty reading
Amazon
WebPages, and so I downloaded Java Access Bridge, as he suggested. As a
result, I'm no longer experiencing sluggishness on Amazon pages.

Please correct me if there's a later version, Don (you mention 2.1), but
I
found a Sun Java page with a description of Access Bridge and links for
downloading version 2.0.1:

http://java.sun.com/products/accessbridge/

Note. I didn't bother with the special Sun download manager, as
recommended
on that page. I just clicked on the Access Bridge link itself, saved to
my
desktop, and then let the application's wizard take over. It's a very
smooth
process.
