Hi. I am not sure which build of JAWS 7.1 you are using. I suspect you
need to update to a later version of 7.1 see below where issues
regarding the combo box behaviour that you are experiencing have been
fixed. So I suspect without knowing the build of your JAWS 7.1 that you
need to update to a later build.
Robin
JAWS 7.10 Automatic Update Now Available
The second automatic update for JAWS 7.10, released on November 8, 2006,
contains fixes for issues we addressed for our 7.10 customers. It also
includes minor modifications for Microsoft Internet Explorer 7. While
the previous JAWS 7.10 update works well with Internet Explorer 7, it is
recommended that anyone installing Internet Explorer 7 also update to
the latest JAWS 7.10 update.
Note: This update is intended for Windows XP and Windows 2000 users,
especially those who have updated to Internet Explorer 7. It does not
install on Windows 98 or Windows Me.
To install this update on a computer with JAWS 7.10 and Windows XP, open
the JAWS Help menu and choose Check for Updates. If you do not have
Windows XP, or the automatic update is unavailable to you, please
download the full version of JAWS 7.10.500 and install it to update your
software.
The following is a list of items that were fixed in this update:
Resolved a longstanding issue related to certain video cards, where text
that had scrolled by the mouse pointer may no longer be read by JAWS.
Fixed an Internet Explorer 7 issue where navigating the drop-down list
of certain combo boxes in a Web page using the UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW
keys, JAWS would not always read the selected item.
Fixed the Typing Echo function, which would not work in an Adobe Reader
form opened using Internet Explorer 7.
JAWS now supports multiple user desktops, which solves an issue for the
Cisco Secure Desktop application.
Fixed the issue where switching between Eloquence and SAPI 4
synthesizers resulted in a crash.
Fixed an issue where using the TAB key to move about a Web page, and
downloading files from a Web page would cause Internet Explorer to
crash.
JAWS correctly speaks Microsoft Access form buttons.
In Microsoft Excel, if the text in a worksheet cell wraps to form
multiple lines, you can now use the Excel F2 function key and the UP
ARROW and DOWN ARROW keys to hear JAWS speak individual lines. In
previous releases, JAWS would read the entire cell contents.
Fixed a problem when selecting text from right to left in NotePad failed
if Enhanced Edit was turned on in this application.
When localizing screen sensitive help messages into French, the
following characters are no longer reversed: a and q; w and z.
Resolved issues regarding the Japanese keyboard layout and the CAPS LOCK
key.
Added a new keystroke, INSERT+WINDOWS+F4, which Support Staff can use
with customers to terminate JAWS and all related processes while
creating a memory dump file for JAWS at the same time. This will help
with further diagnosis in the future if problems arise. The file
containing the JAWS version number will be saved to:
C:\Documents and Settings\[your user name]\ApplicationData\Freedom
Scientific\JAWS\7.10\Settings\JAWSMemDmp
The first automatic update for JAWS 7.10 was released on July 20, 2006.
The following is a list of items that were fixed in this update:
When using JAWS, Windows Explorer no longer fails when you log back on
to your computer after it has gone into hibernate mode or you have
locked it.
When you open a collapsed item within a tree view, JAWS now consistently
announces the number of sub-items.
Resolved an issue where JAWS was not recognizing active Internet
connections for some users attempting to check for updates.
Resolved several issues where JAWS would occasionally fail to read the
contents of certain combo boxes.
List views and tree views that have been reclassed to be recognized as
list views and tree views are now spoken correctly when navigating or
performing the Say Line command.
Resolved an issue in Internet Explorer where some tables were not
wrapping correctly in Screen Layout mode.
In Internet Explorer, the "Web RentACrowd" speech and sounds scheme now
works correctly.
When using the TAB key in Internet Explorer, JAWS no longer announces
the content of combo boxes when you move away from them and move to
another control.
JAWS no longer fails when used with certain programs that place a large
number of graphics on a single line.
The Route Braille to Active Cursor and Route Braille to PC Cursor
commands now work correctly in rich edit windows, such as WordPad or
Outlook messages.
When switching JAWS languages, the layered configuration is now switched
correctly as well.
When you switch the active JAWS language, all braille settings are now
loaded correctly.
In Outlook and Outlook Express, resolved an issue where JAWS would only
appear to read the first line of a message.
In Outlook, JAWS now speaks superscript or subscript numbers correctly.
In Microsoft Word, when you move to a heading with H while JAWS is
performing the Say All command, JAWS now announces the heading and then
finishes reading the document.
In Microsoft Word, the INSERT+F6 list of headings now displays correctly
in the German version of JAWS.
In Microsoft Excel, when you select an entire row or column, only the
first and last cell coordinates and contents are announced
JAWS now reads combo boxes in Adobe Acrobat dialog boxes without
requiring you to open them with ALT+DOWN ARROW.
New scripts for Eudora are now available, which fix a number of
different issues reported by users.
Resolved an issue in Adobe PhotoShop, SoundForge, and other programs
where pressing UP or DOWN ARROW in a combo box would speak nothing.

If I press the space bar and then down arrow, it jumps me to another
part of the web site as if I have made a selection.
Sincerely,
Lauren
