IBM Lotus Symphony is a free word processor. You can find out more about
it and download it from
http://symphony.lotus.com/software/lotus/symphony/home.nsf/home.
I use it pretty successfully at the office with JFW 10 and a patch
provided by my company, which I'm told will be in the next update of JFW
10. It seems a bit flaky to me at the moment, but I'm optimistic that
accessibility will continue to improve. The think I like about it is how
much feedback you get regarding things like paragraph styles, nested
lists, tables and so on. Another thing I like about it is that objects,
including accessibility, are handled consistently across the
applications in the suite. For example, you can tell the nesting of a
list when reading a presentation or a document, and tables in a document
behave just like a spread sheet. Like I said, it's usable but a little
flaky right now, but I think it has the promise to be even more
accessible than MS Office in the future.
Although Jart seems like a fine application to me, and I am glad to see
that it's developers go out of their way to work with screen readers, it
just doesn't fill a need for me at the moment. I use an editor, NoteTab
Pro, which has a spell checker built into it, and does all of the simple
editing I need to do. When it comes to word processing, I'm looking to
work with things like nested lists, tables and paragraph styles, and I
just don't see enough support for this--with accessibility--in Jart. I'm
not knocking Jart, I think there's a need for a simple word processor,
and I think Jart does a great job of fitting this bill with
accessibility in mind.
