[JAWSLite] finding a vanishing checkbox

Hi all --
I have been using jaws for some time now but never figured out how to do the
following.
Some of the dialogs, in OE for example, have a sequence of items with
checkboxes that I arrow through and press the spacebar to check.
The problem is that in some of the cases, the spacebar does not toggle the
checkbox. Furthermore, when I route jaws to pc and arrow around to manually
check or uncheck the box, I find that sometimes the box is there and other
times not.
There seems to be no rhyme or reason for the checkbox to vanish or not --
but since jaws is smart enough to speak the state of the box, I would think
it should be able to find it with the jaws cursor.
It seems to me some time ago that someone suggested reclassing something to
make vanishing things appear, but I don't remember what the procedure was.
Could someone more familiar with jaws scripting possibly share how to locate
the box in question?
The current dialog in question is the columns dialog on the view menu in
Outlook Express.
TIA and happy sharking...
