If it's really a form, that is, if it's using the Word "form" feature,
then there will be fields that you press tab to move between. In that
case, you don't have to worry about erasing anything (except text you've
entered before).
If someone has created a document, that when printed looks like a paper
form, and they're asking you to fill it out using Word, then often this
just isn't possible because the author of the document didn't know Word
to a sufficient degree to design a document that could be created this
way.
It is possible for them to cause any text from a certain position on a
line to the end of the line to be underlined, and if they did this, then
anything you type will be underlined, and they can cause the underlines
to extend across the line to the right-hand edge. If they did this,
then you'll have no trouble entering text; it will be underlined as you
type, and you won't erase anything.
The worst possible way is for the author to have typed the underline
character across a page. That does mean as you type you will erase the
underline character. You could cause the text you type to be
underlined, but it won't look the same as the underlines that extend to
the end of the field. And if they didn't use a fixed-spacing font, then
the underlines they setup won't line up properly as you type text in
their place (because it won't be the same width as the underline
character).
In this last case, they may accept the form even if you distort it
somewhat to fill it out, as it is your only way, but if you're the
creator of this form, you really should not use this method ever.
