Hi Jim:
Below is the recommended settings for jaws with XP that freedom scientific
suggests for Windows XP and JAWS
in Windows XP Home or Professional. You must be logged in with
administrative rights to make several of these changes.
Many of these settings are changed within Control Panel. To open Control
Panel, press the WINDOWS KEY to open the Start Menu, move to Control Panel,
and press ENTER.
Note: The recommended settings changes are not typically necessary for more
recent versions of JAWS, such as 6.x and 7.x etc, but I find it works
better if you do make the changes.
Beginning with JAWS 7.10, it is not necessary to change Windows XP's
display properties to Classic view. JAWS is compatible with either the
default XP view
or the Windows Classic view. However, when navigating lists with the
keyboard, there are slight advantages to using the Classic view.
Freedom scientific used to suggest setting the display properties as
follows before jaws version 7.10.
• Display Properties
1. From the Control Panel, move to "Display" and press Enter.
2. From the themes combo box, select Windows classic.
3. In the List of backgrounds on the Desktop page, choose Bliss.
4. Set Position to "Stretch."
5. In the Screen Saver combo box on the Screen Saver page, press HOME to
select none.
6. On the Appearance page, set Windows and Buttons to Windows classic
style.
7. Set Color Scheme to Windows Standard.
8. Set Font to normal.
9. Close the dialog.
Note: After making these changes, the Display page Themes combo box says
"Modified Theme.".
In addition when using the windows XP theme view Freedom Scientific used to
suggest the below:
• Display Properties for windows XP theme view.
1. minimize all applications (windows key+m)
2. Un select the item if it's checked (control+spacebar)
3. Activate the context menu (windows application key)
note: this is the key to the left of the right control key on standard
windows keyboards.
4. Press the letter r to activate the display properties
5. on the Themes Page:
set to windows xp.
To change press alt plus down arrow to open
note: Do not use XP modified
6. Control Tab to the Desktop Tab
Set background to bliss
Set position stretch
7. Press Control Tab to Screen Saver
Set to none]
8. Control Tab to Appearance Tab
Set to Windows xp
Color Scheme blue default
Font Size Normal
9. Control+tab to the settings tab, set the color to 32 bit and resolution
to 1024 by 768
10. Tab to okay and hit enter.
• ** I find instead, with jaws 8 I get better results using XP pro by
making the following display changes in Display Properties.
1. Press the WINDOWS KEY to open the Start Menu, move to Control Panel, and
press ENTER.
2. If not already in classic view, Press TAB twice. You should hear,
"Switch to classic view, button."
3. Press SPACEBAR. This changes Control Panel to classic view, if not
already in classic view.
4. Press D until Display is selected, and press ENTER.
5. On the Themes page in the Theme combo box, change the setting to
"Windows classic.".
6. Press CTRL+TAB to move to the Desktop page. In the List of backgrounds,
choose "none.".
7. Press CTRL+TAB to move to the Screen Saver.
8. The Screen Saver combo box should be active. Press HOME to change this
to "(None).".
9. Control tab to the setting Paige, set the color to 16 bit medium bit and
resolution to 1024 by 768.
10. Press CTRL+TAB to move to Appearance. the Windows and Buttons combo box
should be active. Set this to Windows Classic Style.
11. Press TAB to move to the next control, the Color Scheme combo box. Set
this to Windows Standard. Press TAB one more time to move to the Font Size
combo box. and Make sure that the Font is set to "normal.".
12. Press ALT+E to activate the "Effects" button. A 3 state button is
active; it is labeled "Use the following transition effect for menus and
tool tips.".
Press SPACEBAR to change this to say "3-state button, not checked.".
13. Press TAB to move to the checkbox "Hide Underlined letters for keyboard
navigation until I press the ALT key." Press SPACEBAR to clear this check
box.
14. Press ENTER to close this dialog and you return to the Appearance page.
NOTE: these changes have now caused the Themes page Themes combo box to say
"Modified Theme."
15. Press ENTER to return to Control Panel.
