[JAWSLite] Re: can jaws use hardware synth if sound is busted?

Assuming that your hardware synth is installed in JAWS, and JAWS starts
automatically, when there is no sound you can press JawsKey+Control+s to
bring up a list of available synths. On my machine I get the following
list:

Select a Synthesizer
Remote Access Speech
Eloquence Software
No Speech
SAPI 5
DECtalk Access32 Software
DECtalk Express Set to COM1

If the name of your hardware synth is the only one in the list that begins
with that letter, you just need to press the letter and then enter. In my
case,
to get the hardware synth Dectalk Express I would press D twice and then
press enter.

I would practice this first while there is sound.

Subject: [JAWSLite] can jaws use hardware synth if sound is busted?

Somehow sound got messed up on my PC yesterday. I have no idea how. It is a
dual boot Windows XP and linux machine and when I rebooted into Windows, it
simply had no sound at all. Maybe it was a Windows update that was
automatically installed when I booted into Windows. Luckily, I happened to
have a USB headset handy. I plugged it in and got sound. Then I was able to
install the rest of the updates and run the Add Hardware wizard. I don't
know what fixed it but the next time I rebooted, I got sound through the
sound card. Problem fixed.

Anyway, I was thinking that if I hadn't happened to have the USB headset
handy, I'd have been sunk. On the linux side, in a similar situation, I'd
use a hardware synth. I have linux configured to speak through the hardware
synth if it's connected. If not, it speaks via software speech.

I was hoping to do something similar with jaws. Anybody know of a way to do
that? Maybe something as simple as a batch script that reconfigures jaws to
use a hardware synth. Then if sound is busted, I can run the batch script. I
ought to be able to do that without speech. Just press Windows+r and type in
the name of the batch script.
