[JAWSLite] can jaws use hardware synth if sound is busted?

Somehow sound got messed up on my PC yesterday. I have no idea how. It is a dual boot Windows XP and linux machine and when I rebooted into Windows, it simply had no sound at all. Maybe it was a Windows update that was automatically installed when I booted into Windows. Luckily, I happened to have a USB headset handy. I plugged it in and got sound. Then I was able to install the rest of the updates and run the Add Hardware wizard. I don't know what fixed it but the next time I rebooted, I got sound through the sound card. Problem fixed.

Anyway, I was thinking that if I hadn't happened to have the USB headset handy, I'd have been sunk. On the linux side, in a similar situation, I'd use a hardware synth. I have linux configured to speak through the hardware synth if it's connected. If not, it speaks via software speech.

I was hoping to do something similar with jaws. Anybody know of a way to do that? Maybe something as simple as a batch script that reconfigures jaws to use a hardware synth. Then if sound is busted, I can run the batch script. I ought to be able to do that without speech. Just press Windows+r and type in the name of the batch script.
