[JAWSLite] Re: aws and Laptops

any laptop I believe -- I have had upwards of 6 laptops over the past 8
years and all ran jaws just fine. In fact, I find the laptop keyboard
configuration of jaws is easier to use than the numpad in many respects. I
use my laptops with and without an external full sized keyboard, but have
the jaws laptop keyboard configuration set in the basics menu. One nice
thing about using laptop keys in jaws is that you aren't constantly moving
your hand back and forth to the numpad.

Anyway, as far as what laptops are better, I have had trouble with Dell and
a consequent disagreement with customer support who sent me back my laptop
unfixed shortly before my warranty expired, then had the gall to call me up
and ask if I wanted to pay to extend the warranty. I decided not to use Dell
after that.

Toshiba has been good, albeit I am having problems finding the drivers for
my 4 year old toshiba laptop, mainly because they don't post the drivers
online after 3 years from the time the laptop goes obsolete. Any ideas
where I can find a graphics driver are welcome. Meanwhile I can't use jaws
on that laptop.
Other Toshibas have been good. In fact, this is the third.

I have a Lenovo now, which I have really liked, but unfortunately it has one
idiosyncrasy -- some installation CDs don't read properly in the drive. In
particular, if there is a lot of data on the CD, it will go into a rapid
spin and then time out and abort the installation. There is nothing to do
but copy the cd on another computer and download it to the laptop and
install it from the hard disk.

I had an HP, which was a good little box, if it hadn't been that they gave
me the wrong set of installation CDs with the hardware. I found this out
too late trying to repair the OS. It took weeks with HP and a bunch of
money to get the right software, including $62 for a driver CD for that
laptop. Eventually I gave the laptop to my nephew, who put it in his
briefcase and set it down near the trunk of his car and forgot about it
until he accidently drove over it.

Finally I had a Mac, believe it or not. My nephew wanted that so I sold it
to him as I wasn't using it.

Hope this helps. Good luck. Get what features you like -- which could be
something as small as keyboard layout, color of light indicators, switches
and jacks -- I for example, like hardware switches to turn on and off the
wireless adaptor, and some colors of light are easier to see than others.
And of course, be sure the specs of the machine are what you want -- speed,
memory, portability.
Happy shopping.
