Hello,
First of all, I have found that it usually works better when editing a file
to first export it as a .WAV or .MP3 file and close Audacity. When Audacity
is opened again and the saved file is opened, editing seems to work more
smoothly.
To remove a few seconds from the beginning of the audio file press the home
key to make sure you are at the starting position. Holding down the right
arrow key moves a little bit at a time away from the beginning point. If
you hold down the right arrow a few seconds and then release it, you can
then press spacebar to find out where the starting point has changed to. If
you have gone too far then hold down left arrow to move back. After moving
in either direction with the arrow keys use the spacebar to find out the
current location. When you find the location to start selecting from, hold
down shift key and press the home key to select from the current position to
the start of the file. You can then use CTRL-K to delete the selected
portion. For some reason CTRL-K doesn't always work the way it should, but
if you press backspace key after CTRL-K the selection should be deleted.
You can also choose to start selecting from the beginning of the file by
pressing home to move focus to the beginning of the file and then by holding
down shift with right arrow key to select toward the end of the file. After
releasing the shift and arrow key you can use spacebar to hear what is
selected. Adjust the selection using shift with right and left arrow keys
and then using spacebar to hear the result. Use CTRL with the letter K, and
perhaps follow that keystroke with a backspace to delete the selected audio.
Selecting a portion at the end of the file works similarly. Start by moving
to the end of the file by pressing the "end" key. Hold down left arrow for
a couple seconds and after releasing it use spacebar to find out where the
starting point will be. If not where you want it then use right arrow to
move closer to the end of the file or left arrow to move closer to the
beginning of the file. If you have the position correct then you should be
able to press spacebar and the file should start playing from the point
where you want to start selecting for deletion. Again, hold down shift and
right arrow to select a little to the right and shift and left arrow held
down to select to the left. You can use shift with end key to select from
where you want to start the deletion to the end of the file. Once you have
the area you want to delete selected then use CTRL-K or perhaps CTRL-K and
then the delete key.
I have found that deleting in the middle of a file is somewhat tricky,
although I have an earlier version of Audacity and the process might have
been improved in the later beta version. It works the same way as the
above. Find your starting point using the arrow keys and using spacebar to
listen and confirm your starting point. Use shift right arrow and shift
left arrow to select a portion to delete. After using shift with right or
left arrow you can use spacebar to confirm what will be deleted. When you
have selected what you want to delete then use CTRL-K and/or backspace for
deleting the selected range.
Take care.
