Unfortunately, there's no way to force Outlook 2007 to use anything other
than Word for reading and writing emails. However, there is a fix, although
it has some potential drawbacks. I'm pasting below information that I wrote
on another list about this.
This setting is totally buried. To find plain text, do the following:
1. Press Alt-T for the tools menu.
2. Press S to get into the Trust Center.
3. Press Left Arrow twice, or until you hear Email Security.
4. Because the option for plain text is closer to the end of these options,
press Shift-tab until you hear Read All Standard Mail in Plain Text. This is
a checkbox, so check it with the spacebar.
5. At this point, you can just press Enter to close the dialog box.
A couple of notes on using this setting. Because Outlook 2007 only gives the
option of using Word as the way to read and write email messages, some
messages, (especially those with complex tables) don't read right. Although
making these changes does definitely solve the problem, it also creates a
new potential problem. When converting the messages to plain text, links
that have text associated with them are completely read out. So, if a link
would normally say "Click here", instead it's going to say "click here
http://www." So on and so forth. So, although viewing in plain text does
have its advantages, it also has that drawback as well.
