JAWS Light Purpose

This list is for the discussion of anything related to the JAWS screen reader:
its function, settings, operation, interface, and general use, other than
scripting.

This list is not for the discussion of the use of applications, but rather the
use of JAWS with applications.

Examples: A question on how to create tables in Microsoft Word is beyond the
scope of this list, but a question of how to use JAWS to read tables in
Microsoft
word would be within that scope. Similarly, questions about how to create
shortcuts in Windows are off topic, but messages about reading the dialog in
the shortcut properties window with JAWS are OK.

General Posting Rules

. Remember that the act of joining a list indicates that you intend to comply
with the rules. If you don't intend to abide by them, unsubscribe.

----------
Things To Keep In Mind When Posting

. On topic means that the main thrust of your message is in line with the
purpose of a list. Simply mentioning certain phrases in the subject or body of
your message and then posting something that has little or nothing to do with
the purpose of a list does not make your message on topic.

. Please don't think that by starting your message with "I know this is
off-topic, but...", it is OK to post that message! Even worse is when you post a
message with a subject line that contains the phrase "off topic." If you know
your message is off-topic, then don't post it.

. If someone decides to post a message that is clearly off-topic, please reply
to them privately.

. The moderator does not necessarily have the time to read every word of every
message on the list. He does not know everything about the subjects the
list
covers. Therefore, if he thinks something is off topic, it is because he is not
God, who knows your every thought. E-mail him privately and he will be
glad to have your help seeing the error of his ways.

. No overt selling of products or services. Advertizement in your signature is
fine as long as your signature does not take up more than approximately six
lines.

. Do not try to moderate by sending complaints on the list about violators.
Doing so is off topic and is a clear violation. If something offends you, write
to the moderator.

. No flaming AT ALL! That can't be emphasized enough on a list designed for
learning. If you do not like a particular subject item, then do not flame,
ridicule,
or harass anyone that may like that particular item. Nothing squelches the
desire to learn faster than being ridiculed for either ignorance or preferences
in a chosen subject. The definition of flaming includes saying that someone is
stupid, calling names, saying that someone's ideas are ridiculous or dumb,
and using language that makes list members feel upset or angry at your post.
The same goes for company practices. Complain to the company where it will
do the most good.

. No offensive language, even if your message is on topic.

. Absolutely no polls, surveys, announcements, or attachments.

. No using a spam-blocking service that is not automatically configured to
accept posts from the list.

----------
Helpful Hints

These are not the kinds of posts that will get you in trouble. If you keep
these points in mind, you will help make the list run more smoothly for
everyone.

. Be careful to make your subjects agree with your bodies. When you see a
thread take a new direction, indicate that in your subject.

. Please make an attempt to find answers before you post. We welcome your
questions, but we are busy too, and might be offended if you could have simply
looked in a help file or done a web search for an easy-to-find answer.

. If you are having a problem, you will get faster help if you:

- Clearly state the problem in the subject
- Give a synopsis of the problem at the top of your email
- Clearly write steps to reproduce the problem
- Other helpful information would include software and version numbers

. Please don't guess at the answer to a question. Sometimes misinformation is
worse than none.

. Please refrain from thanking people for giving you an answer to a question
with no other content in your reply on the list. It is perfectly fine to email
someone privately and thank them. If you say thank you to someone on list
indicating that a solution worked, please leave the solution in your email.

. Please post whether a particular answer helped you or whether an answer did
not work for you. This will help all of us learn. Please also include the
steps you took or state that you followed the procedure someone gave you that
was helpful

. No question is "too simple," or "too basic" to voice. Do not be afraid to
ask.

----------
Finally:

. These rules are subject to modification at any time. The moderator invites
and welcomes your input into them. After all, this is your list.
