I would also think that the more coding there is for different versions
would create conflicts within the software and then people would also be
complaining because of these conflicts.

I don't know for sure, but I suspect the reason for dropping support of
Windows 2K is primarily to save cost with respect to testing and
support. If software products continue to support older versions of the
OS, hardware and applications then the test/support matrix becomes huge
and unmanageable.
