depending on the size of the document, you can try Jamal's PDF2TXT which you
can find a link to off of my site:

if that does not work, you will need a OCR application, like open book or
Kurzweil, or my preference is take a little longer to learn the interface,
and use abbey fine reader, which is the real heart of the
Kurzweil reader, and costs 1.99.00 instead of 995.00 as
Kurzweil does
there are a few free OCR programs out there, but most of them are not VI
friendly, while AFR works decently.
