Please don't leave Rick! I appreciate your moderation of this list. You
know how many people are subscribed to this list, and I think only two
people have complained about your message on cross posting. No matter
what you do as a moderator, and I think this is more of a question of
human nature, you're going to get a few people who disagree. I was just
about to drop the list a posting lauding your stand on limiting the
cross posting to this list, but I saw this message before I got to
composing that message. I for one really, and I mean really, appreciate
a well moderated list, and I think you do a great job! Poorly moderated
lists are a huge waste of time! I'm not sure how much my opinion counts,
but I for one want you to stay!
On the subject of cross posting, I just did some research and the stand
on cross posting seems to have become more relaxed over time, which
really surprised me. I did a search on Yahoo! using the string "email
etiquette cross posting", and the consensus seems to be to refrained
from cross posting unless you're talking about a few closely related
lists. IMHO, you shouldn't even post the same message to closely related
lists because chances are the same people are going to be on all of
those lists, and they don't want to see the same message multiple times.
I know this is how I feel.
On the question of why the "carbon copy" field exists, I would claim
that we're talking about an email client, which is obviously used to do
more than just post to a mailing list. IMHO, it's obviously used when
you want to send the same message to more than one individual. that
doesn't also mean it was put there so you could send the same message to
multiple lists. Besides, just because the field is there doesn't mean
you have to use it!
I also don't understand the statement "beside why write 3 or more emails
to lists when one will do with the rest in the address field that is
made for it. that is called bad etiquette." I think the reason cross
posting is frowned upon isn't just because of the use of the CC field,
but it's so you don't waste people's time by sending them multiple
copies of the same message. The answer isn't to avoid using the CC field
but rather not to send the same message to multiple lists.
One final point, I filter my messages, and I still consider cross
posting to be in bad etiquette, so it isn't true that the only people
who consider it bad etiquette are those who don't filter their messages.
I may not be as smart as the person who made that statement, but I don't
know how to use filters to eliminate the duplicate messages I get when
someone cross posts, at least not without running the risk of losing the
message altogether. I've seen people reply to the sender and put the
list in the CC field. Besides, there's no reason someone could specify
multiple recipients in the To field and cross post without ever using
the CC field.
