[JAWSLite] Re: Be careful of Google Desktop!

I assume they're actually talking about having the contents thereof indexed so that you can then sort of search for a .chm file containing certain phrases or something.

Don't use Vista as such yet, but this would make sense to me.

Stay well

The Vista on my system includes CHM in the indexing and you don't have to add it. Not only are they shown in the list, but I have done searches for *.CHM using the Vista search and they all immediately appear. I just checked for PDF files and I immediately got a list of them as well. I use Vista Home Premium. I am not sure about Vista Basic, but those file types definitely are indexed and immediately found on my system.

Thanks Brian for your help, but unfortunately, just because you can add
an extension to the list, it doesn't mean the indexer can read it. In
order to read the contents of a given file type, the vista indexer needs
an "I-filter" for that type, and it does not have them for PDF or CHM
files. You can add them to the list of file types as you point out, but
it accomplishes nothing.

Below is from:

http://www.build6000.com/content/view/692/65/

"While this is fine for these file types, I happen to have a large
library of IT reference books stored as other document types, such as
.PDF and .CHM. As Windows Vista search does not index the contents of
these files it is a manual effort to open each file and continue the
search within the file itself. A slight problem if you have more than a
couple of hundred documents (or reference books, yes I should get out
more). So luckily for people who work with document and file types that
are not covered by the default iFilters, you can add additional filters.
"

This site has links to various I-filters you can download and install in
order to bring the vista indexer closer in capabilities to Google
Desktop. On my Vista pc, I will investigate switching over from Google
desktop to the Vista indexer to see if I can add my network attached
storage drive for indexing. I can't seem to get Google desktop to index
it under Vista, and since it's got 250 gb worth of data, that's a big
inconvenience (I don't know why since I've got it indexed using my xp
laptop ... oh well ...).

You are exactly right. Google Desktop certainly beats XP searching
capabilities. I do want to mention though that for those
using Vista, chm
files are included in the indexing. If a file type is not
being indexed in
Vista, it can easily be added to the indexer. Here are the steps:

1. Open the control panel from the Windows start menu.
2. Type the word "index" (without the quotes) into the search box.
3. Tab to Indexing Options and press enter.
4. Tab to the Advanced button and press enter. If you are
prompted for an
administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide
confirmation.
5. Use shift-tab to move to the page tabs and right arrow to
the files of
type page.
6. Tab to the list of file types. There are 766 listed in
the list on my
system. You can arrow down and check or uncheck the various
types. You can
also tab to an edit box and type in a file type not listed.
After typing in
a new extension then tab to the Add new Extension button and
activate it.
7. There are also a group of radio buttons that allow you to
choose to
index only the properties or the properties and file content.

Merry Christmas to everyone on the list! I hope the new year
is a good one
for all of you!

Brian,

This is a good point; but for some reason, it only happens
when outlook
is first started; each time you return to the outlook window
it is then
focused correctly.

I will go investigate the Vista indexer, but there are still many many
people on xp, and I think Google desktop is quite useful to them.

I guess I'll need to go trackdown an article comparing it to vista
indexer, especially to see how many file types vista indexer
will index.
One of the nice features of google desktop is that with an optional
component, it will index .chm files, and I've got a lot of e-books in
that format.

thanks.
