[JAWSLite] Re: Be careful of Google Desktop!

You are exactly right. Google Desktop certainly beats XP searching capabilities. I do want to mention though that for those using Vista, chm files are included in the indexing. If a file type is not being indexed in Vista, it can easily be added to the indexer. Here are the steps:

1. Open the control panel from the Windows start menu.
2. Type the word "index" (without the quotes) into the search box.
3. Tab to Indexing Options and press enter.
4. Tab to the Advanced button and press enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. 5. Use shift-tab to move to the page tabs and right arrow to the files of type page. 6. Tab to the list of file types. There are 766 listed in the list on my system. You can arrow down and check or uncheck the various types. You can also tab to an edit box and type in a file type not listed. After typing in a new extension then tab to the Add new Extension button and activate it. 7. There are also a group of radio buttons that allow you to choose to index only the properties or the properties and file content.

Merry Christmas to everyone on the list! I hope the new year is a good one for all of you!

Brian,

This is a good point; but for some reason, it only happens when outlook
is first started; each time you return to the outlook window it is then
focused correctly.

I will go investigate the Vista indexer, but there are still many many
people on xp, and I think Google desktop is quite useful to them.

I guess I'll need to go trackdown an article comparing it to vista
indexer, especially to see how many file types vista indexer will index.
One of the nice features of google desktop is that with an optional
component, it will index .chm files, and I've got a lot of e-books in
that format.

thanks.

The Vista indexer does handle E-mails by default. You can
also set the
indexer to include everything on the hard drive or whatever
specific folders
you want indexed. I have not had much experience using
Google desktop, but
one of my clients has complained that every time she starts
her E-mail and
thinks that her system is focused in the E-mail list, she
notices that she
is not and that the Google Desktop takes focus. She can use
Alt-tab to move
to her list of E-mail messages but this is kind of frustrating to her.

I have to say I have google desktop on an xp laptop and a
vista laptop,
and don't have any issues with either. I much prefer the
google search
interface. I also am not sure that the vista indexer handles emails
like google desktop does.

Yes, when you first install google desktop it can slow down
things a bit
while it does the initial index. If you bring up your list of systray
icons with insert+f10, you can pause the indexing for google
desktop, or
stop it altogether, until you're able to let it run overnight.

hth,
