[jaws-uk] Re: volume control in the sydem tray?

Hi Sue,

Most laptops have a microphone built-in these days and most standard
computers don't.

Microphones for computers are fairly cheap though amounting to only three or
four pounds.

Even if you have a built-in microphone, it is preferable to use and external
one because built-in ones often pick up noises from the workings within the
case.

The boost checkbox is often helpful when making your microphone sensitive
enough for such software as Skype.

The best way to find out if your pc has a built-in microphone is probably to
ask the person from whom you bought it.

Ask again if you need further information.

Hi Phil.

You've just given Francis some very useful information about microphone
volume. I downloaded skype onto my computer last night. I hate to admit to
this, but I don't even know if there's a microphone built-in to my computer.
How can I find this out?

Sorry to sound so thick.

Sue.

Hi Francis,

From the control panel, choose sounds and audio devices.

Tab down to the check box for place volume icon in the task bar and check it
by pressing the space bar.

If you now press control+tab until you get to the audio tab, and tab to the
second occurrence of the volume button and click it, you will be placed on a
dialogue which includes microphone volume, a check box to select the
microphone instead of the line in and a button for advanced options such as
a check box for microphone boost.

You will need to use alt+f4 to escape this dialogue but will then need to
press the ok button in the outer dialogue to save your settings.
