[jaws-uk] Re: more computer problems

Hi Paul.

firstly, a reoccurance of exactly the same problems rather suggests you may
have the same difficulties so have a good look round the back of the machine
and check all cables are propperly connected.

Cheers

Graham

Subject: [jaws-uk] more computer problems

Hi all,

Firstly thanks to those who responded to my lasts computer query when I
explained that it was taking me a good few switch ons before my computer
would start giving me the opening Windows ME music and then JAWS.

I kept several of the E-mails regarding disc clean up and defrag.

I did the former once but have not tried a defrag (think I have got the
right wording.

I asked a friend to come roundjust over a month ago and he noticed that one
of the wires was not in correctly in the back of my tower and so he pushed
it in.

Things had been OK a few days before I asked him to come round.

I asked about disc clean up and he was of the opinion that I wouldn't need
to do this as I hardly had anything stored which would slow down my machine.

Things were Ok for a couple of weeks but recently, I have again had problems
whereby I will switch on my PC but I don't get any sound and so have to
switch on via the main button on my tower, switch back on and tryagain.

Sometimes this will only take two switch ons but other times, it can take a
good 6 to 8 switch ons before I even hear the opening jingle and JAWS.

Also my printer is switched to come on automatically which it usually does
just before I hear the opening jingle.

When the printer doesn't automatically come on, I suspect a problem and so
switch of at the tower. AS soon as the computer has gone of, the printer
switches on. When I switch the tower back on, I will hear a series of short
bleeps and then if ai am lucky, the printer wil come on again, making it's
usual clunky and wary sounds before hearing the opening windows jingle and
then JAWS.

I have even taken to leaving my PC on for most of any day to save having to
go through the process of switching it off and on each time I wish to use
it.

Yesterday, I switched it on at around 4 pm but again had to switch it off
and on about twice before it worked properly.

I spent about 5 hours listening to a BBC Radio station via the net and all
was well until just before 9 pm when the audio from realplayer stuttered and
both it and JAWScrashed.

At this point, I pressed the reset button on my tower but nothing happened
and so I pressed the main button to turn the machine of.

Normally, when I press the reset button following A JAWS and or other audio
crash, the PC wil come on asnormal and I wil hear the printer start up and
thehhn hear JAWS saying the scan disk error message.

I should also point out that now I wait until this has been checked as my
friend advised me to do so.

After about 3 to 4 minutes, I hear the opening Jingle and all is well.

Back to last night and I then spent around 15 minutes trying to get the PC
to activate but it wouldn't do anything. I should alsdo point out that when
switching it back on each tie, I was using the main button because pressing
reset hasn't always worked for me and I don't know why this is.

I have a feeling that there may also be some kind of conflict with my
printer as it doesn't always start automatically when it is meant to.

I have just checked the wires in the back of my tower and they all seem to
be pushed in correctly.

I am now a little stuck as I am not sure what else I can do apart from maybe
trying to do another disc clean up and think about a defrag.

I am going to contact my friend again and see if he can come over to have
another lookat my PC.

If anyone on this list thinks they can help further then please get back to
me as I would like to solve this problem as it is getting a little annoying
now.

Sorry for the longish E-mail but thanks for reading.

As mentioned earlier I am using Windows ME and also JAWS version 5.

Regards

Paul.
