[jaws-uk] Re: macafee security

Hi,

This is a normal message which I have seen whereby the downloads from
Windows Update get cached to your hard drive, but are not installed.
When the system shuts down, they will install just before the shutdown,
leaving you to reboot the machine with the updates installed at a later
time.

I have had this happen on a laptop, though I have never seen it happen
on either of our two desktops (though it must happen). I am not sure if
it only happens with certain updates which have high priority or
something, as I have had the icon on this sytem for a few days now, and
only today installed the updates that had been downloaded, and nothing
was installed when I shut it down last night. Was also a bit flummoxed
when this happened as like you was expecting the system to just power
off.

Thanks.
Andrew.

Hi Francis and all,
I'm wondering if you are encountering the near-disaster which I met a
few weeks ago. Having fast Broadband, I'd accepted an invitation to
click and nothing seemed to happen. I presumed that I hadn't clicked on
exactly the right spot and decided to ask my wife to sort things out
next time I booted up. When, much later in the day, I wanted to shut
down my PC, the hard drive started to go berserk. I asked my wife what
was happening and she told me that there was a message on the screen
(obviously not related by
Jaws) to the effect that programs were being installed and that, under
no circumstances, should I proceed with the shut-down.

All a bit scary for a novice

Colin
