I don't think that this is strictly necessary as I think that it would apply 
centring to the whole of the current paragraph but I've always done this
myself.

Are you trying to centre a single line or the text in a whole paragraph?

What text are you trying to centre? I'm just wondering if you have either 
got too much text on a line such that you can't see the effect of the
centring or you have perhaps added in some unwanted characters such as
tabs,
extra spaces or perhaps an amended margin or column at the place you are
working on?
I've seen situations in the past where someone had used a large number of 
spaces to try to position text but hadn't realised the effect that it
might
have when doing further editing.

Certainly it should be a simple case of selecting the text you want to
centre and then use the Control+E combination as Norman suggests.

When you open a document press control and E together which will centre
all text. If you wish to left aline just press Control and L and control 
J if you wish to justify.
