[jaws-uk] Re: checking for viruses with JaWS

Paul
Ok, it sounds like your virus database is being updated but are you running any
scans of your hard drives? To check this you need to go into the AVG
application by selecting 'Programs' from the start menu, then arrow down the
list until you find AVG and press enter. You should then get a sub-menu and
you should arrow down to 'AVG free edition for Windows' and press enter to load
the application.

Once loaded, press F6 to display a list of the results from the previous scans
of your system. They will be in date order and you nmay need to use your Jaws
cursor to read them (I'm not sure about this because I'm at work at the moment
and writing this from memory as we haven't got AVG here!). You ought to be
running a scan at least once a week, so if there's nothing in the list or the
scan dates show large intervals between runs then you need to adopt a scanning
regime.

AVG can be set to run a daily scan but if your computer is not switched on at
the time of day this is set for, then it won't happen. To run a full system
scan manually, press F4. This could take a while to run depending on how much
data is on your system, so set it going when you don't have to work on your
computer.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your E-mail.

To explain what happens.

After I switch on I get the opening jingle. Then JAWS will announce that it
is ready and the desktop will appear.

Then I get the AVG message telling me that I am now downloading the latest
version and when the download is complete, my AVG will be updated
automatically. I am then on the cancel button which earlier this year I was
activating not realising it which explains why I got those viruses.

After a few seconds or so, I get a tinging sound and then JAWS says
something like "avg update to activate press space bar, 30 seconds".

I hit enter and that's it. I presume then that it has been updated.

My friend set it up so that it would update on start up. This happens once
each day.

Now I had sorted out the problem of cancelling, I don't think there are any
others.

Hope that explanation helps but come back to me if you require more info.

or if you think you can shed any light on last night's problems.

Regards

Paul.

Paul
Are you regularly updating your AVG Virus database and running virus scans?

Cheers
Chris

Subject: [jaws-uk] checking for viruses with JaWS

Hi All,

Tonight it has taken three goes for the computer to start up properly.

I am wondering whether or not I have some kind of virus and wondered if
there is a way of checking.

I do have a friend but am a bit loathed to contact him so near to Christmas.

If you can help then could you please provide a step by step guide as to how
I can check.

I am only guessing that I have a virus as the last time this happened, my
computer sound went completely and I had to get my friend to take the tower
away and sort it out.

At that time though I was inadvertently cancelling the AVG on start up. I
now know not to do this and as far as I can tell I don't seem to have a
problem as I haven't had any virus detected message come up.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards

Paul.
