Have a look in Tools, AutoCorrect Options, AutoCorrect As You Type Tab.

P.S. You don't mention which version of word you're running, but to my
knowledge the AutoCorrect Options dialogue has been present at least since
2000.

I can insert  bullets and numbers in a document but just wondering how can
you put in bullets and numbers automatically at the beginning of each line
when you are putting in a list of items  in.
