Hi Dave,
My wife and I are using more or less the same set-up as yourself and your wife, in that, I am wired into a BT hub and my wife is connected wirelessly, but I have not noticed a slow connection as such, although when I am downloading from the net, my laptop does seem rather slow now and then.
