[jaws-uk] Re: Windows update

Thanks for answering, once I wouldnot have thought of answering, my Hd
that failed after 18 months caused so much knock on disaster but that was
Engineers mistakes, however the Western Digital that failed was replaced by
an IBM Hitachi, that is what I have now and which Andrew had to reformat. I
then asked questions viglen said Western digital were costing too much for
their company, prices were fluctuating, the IBM is fast but a bitnoisier
.
regarding SeaGate, it is I am told Ok now,but not for nothing was it once
nicknamed "stickygate, a local Engineer who makes computers said they were
notorious for sticking I assume they had to work hard to lose that "Stickygate label Regards dorothy. ----- Original Message ----- From: "john coley" <johncoley@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

Hi Dorothy, not an easy question to answer. I've had three computers in the
last six years. I'll give you the history. In 2000 I bought a Gateway. It
was ok in as far as it went, but, although I had two hard disks they were
very small ones, each only 20 gb. Also it had many failures over the four
years I had it, which, and here I may be opening a can of worms, I think was
due to the Gateway software.
I then bought a Dell 8400 on ebay from a Dell reseller. Sadly, although
new it had been interferred with. It had been configured by Dell as a raid,
but one of the hard disks had been removed. It also had a hidden recovery
partition. I had to format and reload in order to set things straight. The
Dell was a nightmare. It used to go into rebooting cycles. It wasn't till
I'd given up on it, having spent £700 on engineers to try to fix it that I
found out what the problem had been. It had been massively overclocked. I
don't know if that was the only reason, but certainly one of them.
I then had my current pc custom built by a company near Watford called RL
supplies. I have had one disk failure, but other than for that it's
wonderful. The only thing I don't like about it is the case is different to
any computer case I've ever come across, and I've never been able to swap
out cards. Other than for that it's great.
Back on the subject of disks the only thing I haven't mentioned is my
external, a Seagate 750 gb free agent. It's performed fine to date, but I
haven't had it for long enough to say much more than that.
 Hope your day's going well,
                   John.

John am grateful for your answer but I still wonder how many Hardrives you
have got through in the last say six years, George once said he thought
they
should last 5 years, incidentally speeding up computer. I can tell you
the
one thing that has certainly speeded up my computer both Desktop and lap
top is the new router I got rid off the Edimax Epic router and got a Net
gear, it has 2 letters after it and three numbers and Heavens! both
Pc's
have zipped along

hi dorothy, i don't understand. the operating system uses indexes, yes.
they
tell the operating system where files are and how much space is allocated
to
them. any scan, be it a defragmentation scan, or a chkdsk, or any other
scan, including those conducted by third party applications refer to
those
indexes. computers have always had them since the year dot. i remember in
an
earlier email you mentioned that an engineer or someone had referred to
indexes whirling round in your computer. of course they're accessed
quickly.
computers work quickly.

if your computer picks up a virus it will be known about by the
operating
system, and therefore, dependent on the nature of the virus, ie if it was
a
file it would have been allocated space by the operating system, and
would
be on a file allocation table, but indexes or file allocatition tables
don't
spread viruses.

different viruses work in different ways. they will go where they're
programmed to. they won't spread through your computer, although they may
affect different parts of it.

                   john.

HI John but if you do a Defrag and you say you do this daily if you
had
a
virus wouldn't it spread through the computer with this indexing
business.

Hi Dorothy, if no bugs get onto your system system restore's fine. If
you
get a bug though it will go into system restore and you'll never get
rid
of
it. Each time you run system restore it'll be back again. System
restore
is,
in effect, just a set of configuration settings that tells windows how
your
system was configured on any particular day.
As far as resource hungry applications goes I should think probably
either
sonar, which is a vertual studio firstly, and secondly, although I'm
guessing here, convert x to DVD, which is a program that converts
movies
and
burns them to dvd.

Hi John, slight change of Topic but you said you do not believe in
System
restore or restore points why is that please? It has saved my bacon a
few
times also if you only use Word from the Office suite, which of the
programmes on your computer uses the most power, you are not using a
Scanner
or Ocr so which software is the one greedy for resources. I was
interested
the voice Daniel does not play up,I only use it in Kurzweil, but is
hard
to stop it reading non stop so I only use for long documents that it
can
read through. Thanks for your advice Dorothy

Hi Alex, you're welcome to mail me anytime. Incidentally, crashing a
chkdsk
isn't a good idea. Ok, if it froze you didn't have much option, but I
would
suggest that to make sure all your system files are still ok to run
sfc.

Hi John

this is very interesting, I had about 19 items in my startup, I had
a
look
at it following your message to Dorothy and I have unchecked a few
of
these.
Interestingly I think, jaws was not in there, I don't understand why
that
is, unless it's something to do with the fact that jaws doesn't take
up
a
window on my machine as I prefer to run it from the system tray so
it's
out
of the way.

I'll write to you off list about this issue if you don't mind, as
there
are
things in there I don't recognise.

Dorothy, programs appear in the system tray because they're running.
The
way
to clear your system tray is to stop programs loading at startup.
The
higher
the number of programs allowed to start with windows the slower your
computer's going to be. They all use up resources.
The only two programs that run at startup on my computer are AVG
and
Jaws.
There really is no reason to have everything running at startup.
If you go to start, then run, type msconfig and press enter the
system
configuration window will open. If you back tab till you're on the
tabs,
then arrow to the startup tab, then press tab to get onto the
startup
list.
Everything in that list is starting with windows. The more of it you
uncheck
the better. If you're not happy doing it yourself you could get help
doing
it. When you've unchecked what you want to uncheck tab down to ok
and
press
enter or activate with the spacebar. You'll get a prompt to reboot.
click
yes. Your computer will reboot. You'll get a message when your
computer
starts to say that you are running in selective mode. There's a
check
box
to
stop the message being shown again. Check it and press enter. That's
it.
                    John.
