Cursor up from your tree of contacts and you will find a quick search button. 
This allows you to search for your contacts.

  When using windows live messenger and cursoring down my list of contacts, I 
find that first letter navigation doesn't work.  Is there a quick way of 
selecting a contact other than cursoring all the way through the contacts list 
to find the contact I want to send a message too?
