maybe it will, but I don't think many people would want to move away from
the browser they get as default with their operating system just to order
a
bit of food.
That being said there are many users who do use firefox because it tends
to
be less of a target for virus and other malware writers. and others are
just pro openSource or would prefer to not use microsoft where possible.
I think therefore that it is good practice to ensure that the site works
with both browsers as these are easily the 2 most commonly used by
everyone.

Graham

Friends
Matthew Curry has asked me off list if I will try using Firefox, as he
thinks it might work better with their site. I don't really want to get
into this, as I don't have much time to play around continually learning
new
programs. I am not sure why he wants this, as the vast majority of people
still use Internet Explorer, but if anyone uses Firefox and would be
willing
to experiment, please could they let him know.

Graham,
To build on what you say, it should be added that there is no longer any
valid technical reason for building an alternative website. The technology
now exists to create a visually appealing site, that is both user friendly
and accessible.

Léonie.

Hi all.
I have followed this thread with interest and like others I am pleased
that
Wiltshire Farm Foods are taking the needs of screenreader users into
account. I will be certainly giving the food a go myself.
I know many people have emailed Matthew privately so maybe the point about
separate accessible sites has already been well covered.
Tesco is certainly a very well known example of a company that tried to
create an accessible site, but it has had and still continues to have
signifficant usability issues and I find the main site perfectly usable
anyway, even though there are a few problems of usability namely the
inability to empty your shopping basket with one button or link if you
decide you want to start a new order and remove a partially completed one.
Overall, separate accessible sites mean more work and and there is a risk
of
the accessible site falling behind the main site when it comes to new
features. Keep in mind also, when evaluating accessibility with new
users,
that ability to actually use the features provided with the screenreader
can
vary. Lots of people say they hate tables for example when sometimes the
truth is they just don't know how to navigate them with their
screenreader.
I looked around the website with JAWS and System Access and found things
quite navigable though I did not try adding anything to my basket. I
would
rather see the limited resources that all companies by definition must
have
used on creating an accessible website to start with than having resources
wasted generating too separate websites.
Regards
Graham

Hello All,
as luck would have it, my remote mail goes down over the weekend, so I
couldn't access my work email.
Thank you everyone for you help so far, I've got a fair few emails to
work through, but certainly I've had lots of pointers in the right
direction. I've got a meeting with our site designers, Headscape
www.headscape.co.uk , Monday week to address all the issues so far, so
hopefully you'll see some progress.
Regarding the meal labels, as far as I know we've redesigned them with
help from the RNIB so that they are easier for large-print readers and
character recognition systems to process. I don't think we've gone down
the Braille route as well, apologies for this.
I had a mammoth recording session yesterday, so I've got a fair bit of
editing of the audio catalogue to get through, but hopefully you'll be
hearing my less-than-dulcet tones soon!
Thanks again to everyone
Matthew
