just to point out that hotmail now provides pop3 and smtp servers again, so can 
be used via outlook express etc. See for example:

I've tried GMail but don't like the conversation view that you get in the 
webmail.
Hotmail would be ok but no longer works with Outlook Express.
Yahoo's a possibility but I think it charges for using it in Outlook Express.
