You didn't by any chance add a line did you to the JFW.ini file to force JAWS to work with a specific soundcard at startup? Just a thought as this happened to me. To get round this, press insert f4 then enter. start narater and rerun jaws 8. Martin, Your problem appears to be specific to your machine as I haven't seen any other reports of version 8 not talking. If I were in your situation I would perform a completely new install, maybe it glitched while selecting your synth or sound card.
