Yes. The reason is that not all keyboard layouts display the pound
sign as ANSI163 or shift-3. Thus, the irish Pound (Punt) was at times
abbreviated as the IEP, while the euro is sometimes abbreviated to eur.
Again, the RNIB are probably following a similar practice to TNAUK.

Dear Flor,
Yes, that is so. But an instance I particularly noticed it in was in my
latest copy of Access-It from the RNIB. I also notice in a number of
publications, UKP, at least I think it's that, is used. Presumably this
stands for U K pound.
With very best wishes,
Keith

Are you getting it predominantly in TNAUK distributions of publications?
They attempt to make their material accessible with older machines and
word processors.

George, many thanks.
But, please forgive me if I am very naive, why is the DOS version of the
pound sign used so much?
Many thanks.
Best wishes,
Keith

Hi Keith,
It's quite simple. (almost!) And basically boils down to
the difference between the old DOS character set and Windows
character set.
DOS ASCII 156 is a Pound sign. Windows ANSI 163 is a Pound
sign.
George.

Dear All,
Just a little enquiry re the pound sign please.
In most publications that I read, Jaws does not say the
pound sign, and when I interrogate Jaws, I find it is
character 156.
However, Jaws does say the pound sign that I type myself,
which I find is character 163.
Does anyone have any idea why character 156 is used, please?
I've asked Jaws, through the dictionary, to say "pound" when
it sees character 156, but it only does this when reading
character by character, not in the "Say all" mode.
Can anyone throw any light on why this is?
Many thanks.
Best wishes,
Keith
