[jaws-uk] Re: Something very anoying in the new update

Hi Tristram,
Before I answer your questions I have just unchecked the "legacy" button in
Config Manager and gone through the procedure again and it has reverted back
to its bad behaviour. I will now answer your questions as far as possible.

1. I am using IE 6.0.290X

2. The URL is
www.nwolb.co.uk

3. In the second page of the logging in procedure I am trying to enter
three of my four digit pin numbers and three of my six digit password
characters.

4. On page 1 I enter my personal number (not account number) and then tab
to the "next" button with the tab key and press the spacebar. The forms
mode is switched on either by the enter or spacebar key. On the second page
no keystroke is used except to bring up forms mode again which switches off
when leaving page 1. Jaws then asks me to enter, say, the first digit of my
pin number. Having done this it then goes to the next field and asked me to
enter the second character of my password. (This is where it goes wrong),
it should ask me to enter another number from my pin. It becomes difficult
here because if you try and cursor back or forwards it doesn't tell you what
field you are on, whether it is the first, second or third field of the pin
number zone. Normally you enter the pin numbers as Jaws asks, no keystroke
is necessary as focus moves forward automatically. As mentioned I do not
like to mess around too much in this sort of site in case you get kicked out
and have to re-register. I have not tried to use Insert tab.

5. To answer this one I will go back to page 1. When entering Jaws says
nothing. I read the line and it says "edit". I turn forms mode on and
enter my personal number, tab to "next" and spacebar on that. On page 2 it
then asks me to enter the personal number which it should have said on the
previous page but, in fact, I am on a field for a pin number. It asks me as
described above.

6. I have not used any customisation here.

If you think it may be helpful you can ring me at home during the day and I
will take you through it. I understand what you mean about the "legacy"
thing being a work around and a step backwards. I have been going into this
site almost every day for a year or more so you establish in your mind a
pattern of behaviour and expectation. I have used the site twice today with
the "legacy" checked and it worked fine.

I have just checked your questions again and notice one thing. You asked if
I use the Insert up arrow; well, sometimes I do but I have a habit of using
ctrl L to read a line, which is a hangover from the old days. I noticed
with Jaws 7.0 that it would not allow me to use this keystroke in the same
way. I don't think this has much to do with it.
Regards

David

Hi David
Using the "legacy" support is effectively turning the clock back on Jaws
versions prior to the introduction of the DOM support. It is in the
category of a workaround rather than a real solution to your problem. That
is gonig to take a little more research to sift through the variables.

What helps is a breakdown the problem something like this assuning it is
repeatable:
1 What browser you are using.
2 What website you are using (URL please).
3 Some kind of short succint desciption of what it is you are trying to
do on the site.
4 What keystrokes are being used to navigate to what location or link on
the page.
5 The feedback from Jaws, if any. This is important at the stage where
you are having trouble. If you have tried any keystrokes to find
information what were those eg. insert+tab or insert+Up arrow.
6 If you have used customisation for the page, if so what has changed.

As Brian mentioned the DOM support is the way Freedom Scientific is going,
and is founded in the belief that in future it is going to make things
accessible which currently aren't at the moment.
