Hi to both Johns
I did the error checking, and I had a scare. I was informed that drive c
was already in use and that a scan could be performed on my next reboot. I
rebooted the machine and got so far with it but the computer wouldn't boot
into windows or jaws, so I did it again. After the third attempt, I forced
the machine to switch itself off and on booting up, I managed to get windows
to reboot properly and load jaws.
I'm not sure I like this program as much as I liked the former chkdsk in
win98. Not sure what will happen next time I switch on the machine again,
whether or not it will do another attempt to scan the drive. If it does or
indeed has, recovered lost files, where would they be placed? Do file
fragments have a .chk file ending the way they used to in win98, I'm using
windows xp home edition with service pack 3. I think I need a drink! Any
other experiences tricks or tips most welcome.

Hi Alex, go to my computer, then local disk c. Press alt and enter to open
properties, then shift tab to get onto the tabs. Right arrow to the tools
tab, then tab to open the page. Tab once and the first button you come to is
error checking. activate with spacebar. Tab again and you will find "fix
file system errors". Check with spacebar.
Then tab to start. When you do that you'll get a message saying that the
drive is locked, and asking if you'd like to schedule a schan for next
reboot. Click yes.
If you need to do chkdsk /f go to the start menu and press r. In the run
box type cmd. The command prompt window opens. Type chkdsk c: /f
Windows will say that the drive is locked and ask if you want to schedule
for next reboot. Press y for yes. Then type exit to exit the command prompt
window.
Good luck,
John.
