Wendy sharp I have a very interesting PDF file written by the National consumer Council , I went to them because I heard an article about Anti-virus and other software being put by the Ncc before the office of Fair Trading. I heard an article by one of their members, since the DDA Act excludes goods that are manufactured and Anti-virus products it seems come under this we who use screen readers cannot insist Anti-virus products work with Screen Readers. The Ncc sent me a very interesting article, but it is large and an attachment and in PDF form and you will see that many software packages including anti-virus are referred to the Office of Fair trading for ULA, that is unfair Licence Agreements

What has this to do with Jaws? Well I and others on this list and another Screenreader list are merely wanting anti-virus packages to work with screen Readers. I did my research first through the RNIB and DRC and no joy However in time it may be possible and the NCC know it matters. You will see if you want me to send you the PDF file it is large and indeed their Website is mainly composed of How well they work depends on how they are designed. I still recall one PDf file being nicknamed The Dreaded Morfield File and we had to write to the Webmaster to tell him thinkagain a Major Eye hospital needs top quality Pdf It is often lack of thought that makes some difficult. Dorothy

I cannot post on the list the information as it is too large but ifyou would like to read the NCC article please say so off list

I have Adobe 8, which I think is the latest version, and JAWS 6, which works
very well on many PDF files. I wonder why I can't read these.

The brochure reads here with the latest version of Adobe Reader and JAWS
with no problems at all.

I was looking on Sight and Sound's website, and tried to view a couple of
PDF files, the brochure and a document information sheet. I was surprised
to find that both these documents were inaccessible.

I have quite a number of PDF files on my computer, many of them instruction
manuals. I have just checked that I can still read some of them, so it
isn't anything I have done to alter the settings.

As we all know, inaccessible PDF documents usually means that they have been
scanned in as images rather than being typed in as text. I am surprised
that Sight and Sound, a company supplying specialist equipment and software
to blind and partially sighted people, should produce inaccessible
documents. I would be interested to know what they have to say about this.

If anyone else on this list can access the documents I mentioned, perhaps
they could let us know.

Wendy
