My laptop has a hot key combination which will toggle the sound on and
off, nasty if pressed accidentally.

Dorothy,
No, that is unless there was some other program installed, I don't know
of a specific mute sound button down in the system tray. (A button on
the unit itself or on the keyboard? A possibility.)
