Thanks Marie, I'm now getting used to reading German in Grade 2 English Braille, a bit odd at first as you say but better than ploughing through Grade 1. 
Thanks to you and also Carlos for sorting my Word problem.

You cannot change german into grade 2, you would have to buy a german version of Jaws, then, perhaps you will be able to do this. But I'm not certain. The other way is to buy a braill translating programme but this would only translate documents, not what you read on the screen with Jaws. I've got used to read french in grade 2 english, a bit strange at first but doable. Beggers like me can't be choosers!...

 Dear John,
The hot key for languages is control windows key and l on Jaws 8 (I think this goes back at least to Jaws 6 and possibly earlier versions). Pressing the hot key combination will bring up a list of languages including German. Press first g and then enter to select it at which point Jaws will start reading to you with a German accent and pronunciation.
I have no idea whether it is possible to change braille settings to German grade 2.
