Joan,
 there is a program called quicktime lite that still plays files that
quicktime would normally play, but without all the extra software.
Google around and you should find it.

Quicktime is OK but beware that the installer may well be interested in
foisting more Apple software on your machine than you strictly need.  There
is however usually a way to limit this to what you actually need.
