Dear George and list:
Some UPS for computers and other equipment have devices known as
"GEMOV" designed and manufactured by the General Electric
Company, that will do their very best to protect against
excessive voltage such as from switching on a large number of
customers after the power company has done maintenance or a
lightning strike.
However even these devices have their limits. They often require
replacement after a voltage surge as they will sacrifice
themselves to protect your valuable equipment.
About the only guaranteed way I know of to protect expensive
equipment from lightning strikes to power lines and the sins of
the electric company is to operate your equipment off of a
motor-generator set, the motor being connected to the mains and
the generator to your equipment.
This is expensive, mostly impractical for home or small office
use, but provides the maximum possible level of isolation between
the electric mains and your equipment.
