[jaws-uk] Re: PROBLEMS IN USING THE AUDIBLE.CO.UK WEBSITE WITH VISTA HOME PREMIUM AND JAWS 9.0

Dear Ian

An aproach to this problem has been developed by a colleague of mine William
Burton here at Sight and Sound. It would appear that some add-ons to Internet
Explorer 7.0 may interfere somewhat with the acquisition of information from a
website when using Jaws.

There are certain add-ons that appear to be quite a popular feature of many
users setups and it may be owrth disabling these one by one until you get the
page reading in www.Audible.com back to its previous condition. One very
popular item is likely to be the new Skype add-on called Mastermind, and I
would suggest that you target that first before moving onto some of the others
unless you can very specifically pinpoint another prime culprit.

Add-ons to take a look at are:
Windows Live Sign-in Helper
Windows Live Toolbar Helper
Skype add-on (Mastermind)
Norton Confidential Brouser Helper Object
Windows Live Toolbar
Show Norton Toolbar

Since none of these are required for everyday use of Internet Explorer, and not
all of their features fully accessible to JAWS you may perhaps be able to do
without them by disabling them.

If you require any of them again you will able to go the same route to
re-enable them later on should you wish to.

1. Open the "tools" menu and choose "manage Add-ons" and press enter. Then use
up or down arrow to locate the options in the sub menu called "Enable or
Disable Add-ons" and press enter once more.
2. Press tab to reach the list view and locate one of the items that needs
disabling.
3. Press Alt+D to disable it, and press tab to reach the "OK" button and press
spacebar on it.

After you have tried the Audible website and for some reason it does not work
repeat the above steps with another of the items above until you come to one
that is causing the problem. After you have firmly established that you have
fixed the problem you may then be able to re-enable the ones that did not
affect your web experience should you deem them sufficiently important to
re-enable in your browser.

Hope this helps.

Regards.

The only problem I have had with Audible is that for a while it seemed to
display the wrong download screen and just hang. The audible people were unable
to say why this was happening, especially as the right connection would
inconsistently be made eventually or (if I was lucky) on the first attempt. The
problem only occurred with Internet Explorer (version 6); using Webbie, Audible
worked every time. I am running Windows XP Pro with JAWS 6.2. On doing an
install of the Audible Manager and the Audible Download Manager, the problem
disappeared. How it arose and why it disappeared, no-one from Audible was able
to tell me. However, this procedure could well solve this other Audible problem.

        Kevin,

It may be that Vista is the variable causing the problem. I've got
Jaws 9 on a Windows XP Home machine here and the library page seems ok here.

I haven't got access to Vista, so I'm afraid I can't offer to
explore any further than this. Hope you get it sorted.

        Regards,
        Léonie.

VISTA HOME PREMIUM AND JAWS 9.0

        Good evening,

I have recently purchased a laptop equipped with Windows Vista Home
Premium and have installed Jaws 9.0 onto it.

on attempting to access the "My Library" area of the www.audible.co.uk
site, it freezes and I receive very little information from Jaws. Occasionally,
on attempting to cursor down I receive the message "frame" and "frame end.
Also, on tabbing in and out of the site I receive merely the title information,
i.e. "audible.co.uk" but nothing else. Refreshing the web page does not help.

I've successfully been using www.audible.co.uk for several months on my
desktop which is equipped with Windows XP Professional (its only since I tried
to access the "My Library" using Windows Vista Home Premium that the problems
have started. It just seems to be the "My Library" section which is causing
problems.

I'd be grateful for any light which other users can shed on this. In
particular are there any users of Windows Vista and Jaws 9.0 who use the
audible.co.uk site? If so what have been your experiences?

        Sorry for the lengthy e-mail.

        Regards,
        Kevin
