Marie, Have you tried doing a skype test call?  This should allow you to
record a message which is then played back to you.
If you want to try and call somebody and see what happens, you're more than
welcome to try me.  My skype id is alexstone. And btw, I'm fairly sure Skype
and Windows Live messenger use different ports.
