[jaws-uk] Re: Jaws 8 & Windows vista

Hallo Phillip well George once had a Toshiba for over 4 years how do I know? Well I asked him something once and he replied "if a 4 year old Toshiba is state of the Art" of course now he has Vista it is different I still think your should have last longer than under it was under? wasn't it 3 years, but I hope if you are selling your Pc on EBay you have cleaned off the Hardrive first? People who buy second laptops on EBay often get a surprise as a recent new item said Dorothy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Philip Stephenson" <p.stephenson@xxxxxxxxxx>

Hi Phil & Tristram,

As you'll no doubt have seen from my activity on another list things have moved on with this. I have ditched my Toshiba, (or rather put it on Ebay for spares!) and have been and bought myself a new laptop this weekend.

Ok so the one I got isn't as small or sexy as my Toshiba Tecra was but at £399 it should do the job for a while -it's an Acer with 3gb ram, 160gb hard drive, Intel core 2 duo, decent spec but a brick of a thing.

The problem is I was reliably informed The main issue is that having headache with someone I trust who knows about these things I ma having real problems getting my version of Jaws 8.0.2173 to work with Windows Vista home premium that came on the machine.

I have installed Jaws 8 but whenever I come to launch it or any other Jaws utilities I am told that "the jaws file ahs stopped working and will be closed", or something along those lines. I have turned off the User Account security and set desktop themes to Windows classic but it's just not wanting to play ball.

Yes I know Jaws 9 works but I haven't got Jaws 9 yet and whilst I may be getting it for work that is some way off yet and doesn't help me at home.

So Tris if you're reading this any suggestions? Is it simply that Jaws 8 no longer works with current versions of Vista home premium?

This dead laptop is proving more of a headache than I thought, maybe a demo of Window eyes is called for, maybe not, yet more money!!

Anyway any help / suggestions gratefully received although please bear in mind I am limited on sighted help and can't do anything until I get home tonight!

Many thanks,

Phil

There is no external or PCMCIA card attachments for a laptop that will replace the function of an oboard graphics adaptor. The devies Phil may be thinking of are port replicators and docking stations, but niether or these are the solution. The function of the graphic adaptor is integral to the function of the rest of the machine, therefore if it definitately is certified faulty then you have something far from being a perfectly good machine unfortunately, despite the fact other components may be salvageable. It is likely that the repair cost is simply to replace the entire laptop motherboard which in these days of surface-mount electronics is more or less common practice, hardly anyone repairs computer equipment/tellies/other general consumer electronic items at component level these days.

The thing electronics really don't like, apart from water/coke/sugary tea, or being slapped around a bit is heat. The smaller the enclosure (such as a laptop) the harder they are to keep cool and the more likely component failure is. If you think it is a PC only problem you would be wrong. There are quite a number of iMac customers who have very nice slim machines that can be quite prone to overheating, again limited space + intesnse heat, it's a real killer.

Regards.

Hi Phil.

If you don't want to ditch your old laptop, I believe that there are external graphics devices which can plug in to PCMCIA slots and possibly USB ones too. I don't know how or if they would work with Jaws, maybe Tris could advise but it might save having to throw away an otherwise perfectly good machine and they should cost a lot less than your replacement chip.

You would, of course, have to use an external monitor if you need to see the output.

Cheers,

Dorothy,

The graphics chip has gone on my Toshiba which would cost around £200 to replace and since the machine is nearly 3 years old I figure it's probably worth getting a new one instead of repairing it. Real pain though as I spent good money on it and thought I was getting a more robust machine but that's not the case obviously.

I can't really wait for Jaws 10 in the autumn as I need my own laptop pretty soon as am currently sharing a very old Dell desktop with the rest of the family. Jaws 9 will be through my new Access to Work equipment so bit dodgy installing it at home.

Hmm, this switch to Windows Vista seems a right pain and not something I was planning on doing so yet. Any other advice from others on list?

Hallo Phil, may I ask what happened to cause your Toshiba to expire prematurely? Changing the Topic a bit I know, incidentally Jaws version10 will be out in the Autumn, why not wait and make a bigger jump then I hear it is expected to be very good, you don't have to buy Vista unless you want but you need to choose properly because there seem to be several grades or levels of Vista, its not as simple as xp Home and Xp professional I see some Jaws list users have had to cough up more due to not being clear about this Good luck.

Hi,

Quick question, I'm having to get myself a new laptop due to the premature death of my Toshiba tekra. I'm currently on Jaws v8.02 which according to the FS info should work ok with windows vista, is this definitely the case, is there anything else I need to check?

Many thanks,

Phil
