Hi Nick,
We are now on Jaws version 7.
Please be aware that "Jaws authorisation key" and "Jaws licence" are distinctly
different things.
You have to install an authorisation key from a floppy disk which should have
come with your Jaws 4 disk to allow Jaws to run in permanent rather than the 40
minute demo mode.
The latest versions of Jaws use an internet activation method which obviates
the need for the authorisation disk.
Jaws licences, however, are determined when you buy Jaws. The pro versions
of Windows require a different and more expensive licence than the rest. If
your wife's licence does not cover the pro versions of Windows, you can buy an
upgrade. It might be worth looking at the relative cost of upgrading 4.2
against jumping straight to a later version of Jaws.
You can find information on Jaws, including downloads of Jaws itself which
you could run as demos and training materials at:
http://www.freedomscientific.com/fs_products/JAWS_HQ.asp
The main distributor of Jaws in the UK can be found at:
http://www.sightandsound.co.uk/
and their Jaws price list at:
http://www.sightandsound.co.uk/pages/JAWS_Prices.htm
I have to say that even upgrading might be a rather expensive process. You
may wish to consider an alternative such as checking whether XP home would work
satisfactorily with 4.2 then installing a copy of XP home along side your XP
pro version specifically for your wife. This should only cost you around £60
or £70 as opposed to hundreds.
If you do want to consider the upgrade options, you would probably be best
advised to talk to Sight and sound directly to explore the possibilities.
Their number is on the site.
HTH,
Phil Medway.

Hi to all,
I am about to finally upgrade my wife's PC to Windows XP Pro from Me. I plan
to do a clean install which will mean reformatting my hard drive, and
physically adding a newer drive which will become my master drive. The computer
currently has JFW v4.0 installed, by me, a long time ago. I remember something
about installing license keys at the time - do I need to somehow remove the
current key before reinstalling on a new hard drive? I plan to install v4.02 as
recommended by Phil and others below. Can anyone walk me through the process? I
am sighted so won't need any version of Jaws to be running at install time, but
my wife would like a working version as soon thereafter as possible!
Thanks alot, Nick

Hi Nick,
As others have said you should be able to use 4.2 with XP unless you are
going to XP pro which may require a different licence.
With regard to upgrading to the latest version of Jaws, the current one is
6.2 and you could download a demo version which runs for 40 minutes, after
which you have to reboot before running it again. You could, however, leave
Jaws 4.2 as the default version and allow Jaws 6.2 to be launched from a
shortcut for testing.
There are a lot of new developments since 4.2 and your wife might wish to
investigate them before committing to deciding whether they are worth the cost.
http://www.freedomscientific.com/fs_products/JAWS_HQ.asp
is the page on the Freedom Scientific site for all things Jaws including
the 6.2 Jaws demo and a link to teach internet navigability with more recent
versions of Jaws which you will find under resources. This latter is worth a
look.
Also the latest facilities in Jaws can be found in the "What's new" item in
the Jaws help menus.
I wouldn't recommend buying 6.2 yet since, as others have said, version 7
will be released shortly which would save an extra upgrade step but the demo of
6.2 might give you a flavour of what to expect.
Another issue to consider is that Jaws works best with XP when using XP in
classic mode. There is help, I think, in the operating systems section of the
jaws help for optimising XP for Jaws users. This is also the case for many
applications such as Outlook express, Word etc. You can find these under
"popular applications with Jaws" / "Microsoft applications".
HTH,
Phil Medway.

Subject: [jaws-uk] Jaws 4.0 with XP?
Hello,
I'm new to the list so apologies for asking what may have been asked many
times before (couldn't find a faq). My wife is running Jaws 4.0 on our computer
with Windows Me. I'm about to upgrade to Windows XP and wonder if this version
of Jaws will still work. I know we're in the Dark Ages, but she never really
gets to grip with the current version before it gets upgraded, so I haven't
bothered in quite a while. I'd be interested to hear from anyone who's done the
Me to XP upgrade and the best way to do it (I am sighted so it wouldn't be
necessary to have Jaws on at any point). Also, if anyone wants to convince me
to upgrade from Jaws 4.0 to whatever we're at now, go ahead and sell it to me!
Thanks alot, Nick
