To answer your last question first, no, it doesn't work in all versions in
the same manner.

I too haven't been able to establish how to effect merge in Office 2003 and
JAWS 8.

If you receive off-list help, I would like to know the answer please?

to use the mail merge function in Word 2003.
Where can I get complete info on how to use mail merge? In particular, how
do I select the location in the document to place the inserted merged
fields? Does it work the same in all versions of word?
