Hi Tristram and all,
Your solution to Eloquence not speaking worked fine.
This is a useful tip for anyone who has installed another (often USB) sound
device which then takes over JAWS. On some machines, ie my work machine,
there is a setting to "Do not map through this device", but this setting
does not seem to appear on my home machine - unless I'm being stupid. Even
using the setting under Adjust Audio Properties "Only use default devices"
did not solve the problem of JAWS not speaking at startup.
Anyway, all is well.
Cheers,
Norman

Many of these Skype phones seem to cause problems with the onboard sound
of
PCs. The very worst seem to disable the onboard sound for the duration
the
device is plugged in and Jaws comes through the handset. This one sounds
like it has altered the configuration of the PC even when it is not
plugged
in. A suggestion would be to use the Eloquence trick to direct it to the
correct sound device, note that this will only work if the phone has not
disabled the onboard sound, which in your case it doesn't sound like it
has.
You will have to adaptor the example below to accomodate your Sigmatel
soundcard but the procedure is the same.
Information below will help you get Jaws to address the right soundcard
the
example is for SB live but just subsitute the name windows gives the
soundcard in "sounds and audio" control panel on the "audio" page.
1. Using My Computer or Windows Explorer, browse your hard drive to the
currently running version of JAWS and find the "jfw.ini" file in that
folder.
2. Press ENTER to open.
3. You should find some lines that read:
Synth1Name=eloq
Synth1LongName=Eloquence for JAWS
Synth1Driver=eloq
The number doesn’t matter, it may be 1, 2, or 3, but it must be the same
for
all entries for Eloquence.
4. Add the following line after the driver line:
Synth1Port=SB Live! Wave Device
Of course, you need to make sure that the synth number matches the other
lines, so that if the Driver line read:
Sytn3Driver=eloq
Then the port line would read:
Synth3Port=SB Live! Wave Device
The text after the = sign in the Port line comes from Control Panel/Sound
&
Multimedia/Audio tab It must be one of the entries that can be chosen for
Preferred Playback device.
5. Save your changes and exit Notepad.
Regards.
