Hi Colin,

jaws doesn't go to sleep at all so this is why I am of the opinion of the
fault being with the Braille display.

I would try the old navigators and see what results you get, also another
test is when you have read a line of text, tap a letter on the qwerty key
board and if jaws acts strait away then this will confirm my suspicions.

Hope that this helps.

Hi Christopher,
What makes you so confident that it's a faulty display? I would agree with
you if it were a case of some of the keys not working all of the time. It
looks like a communication problem such as you would get if your braille
display wasn't properly supported. I think the system, so to speak, goes to
sleep, so that the function of the first key press is solely to wake it up
again. I could understand it if I were leaving the system idle for a while,
but the time it takes to read a line of braille is often long enough.

I also have a couple of old Navigators. Maybe I ought to get them out of
storage and see whether they behave OK.

Cheers

Colin

Hi Colin,

With regards to the first 2 problems mentioned unfortunately it is a problem
with your Braille display not jaws.

The only thing I can suggest is if your Braille display is still in
warranty, give the people who you bought it from and tell them about the
problems and get them to send you another one or have it repaired for you.

With regards to the problem in your email client, 1, make sure you have jaws
set to highlighted by holding down the jaws key and press the letter s until
you here highlighted, this should sort that out for you.

If this don't work, please let me have the name of the program that you use
for your emails and I will try and help you further.

Hope that this helps and keep trying and all will be ok in the end.

Hi Christopher and all,
There are so many things that don't work as well as they used to do that it
is difficult to know where to start. I'll select three which particularly
annoy me.

I'm running XP Home with a Handy Tech Braille Wave and 7.1. After any pause
of more than a few seconds, Jaws seems to forget that the braille display is
there. When you are editing, you nearly always need to press your routing
keys twice, and occasionally you still have to resort to the PC cursor keys
to get to the exact cell you want. You get a similar problem with the
panning keys, which I use a lot when working in foreign languages. You read
to the end of your display, issue the command to display the next section to
the right and, as often as not, you find the display hasn't changed at all.
Of course, if you get really mad and hit the panning key twice, you find
that it works first time and moves your display twice.

When I'm replying to some emails, the braille display seems to stick on the
first line. You can see the text, but the cursor is firmly rooted in the
first cell. The only way to pick up the focus is to hit alt-tap and then
shifted alt-tab. I don't know why this works, but it never fails!

When I'm making a selection from a list by using the first letter of the
item I want, Jaws no longer reads the item you are moving to, so, in order
to ascertain whether you have actually got the focus where you want it, you
have to do a quick cursor up and down.

As I said, there may well be solutions, but I'm always left with the feeling
that, by the time I've found them, there will be another upgrade on the way.

Kind regards

Colin

Hi Colin,

The problem you have described below is not a jaws problem, if the keys are
not working then it is to do with the hardware not the software.

If you would like to tell me what other problems you are having with jaws 7
then I will help you with know problem.

I have windows xp home and use a laptop and have had know problems, if we
talk about the problems then I am sure we can all help you.

As I have said before I have downloaded the demo of jaws 8 and find that
fantastic also, we all need to look deeper before blaming our wonderful
access software as most of the time it is not the speech software, but third
party software *smile*.

Don't despair all will work out in the end *smile*.

Hi Martin and all,
Personally, I'm on the point of defecting to Window-eyes. People using this
program never seem to have any of the problems or endlessly recurring
expenditure that we have to put up with, possibly because the users' list is
closely monitored by the designers of the program. I'm told that one of the
Keyboard options available to you is to have a Jaws keyboard layout, though
my informant advised against this on the footing that the Window-eyes
keystrokes are a lot more logical than the Jaws equivalents.

I've been utterly disgusted with the performance of Jaws 7.1, the last
update in my current SMA, so I'm not at all inclined to fork out good money
for anything likely to be as useless. One fairly significant problem is
that the keys on my braille display never produce any response until they've
been pressed at least two or three times. I accept that, if I were prepared
to spend a fortune and/or several days playing with the system, I might be
able to make it a little more functional, but Playing with my PC is not my
life. This endless series of half-cooked updates is a rip-off. If we were
dealing with a product in more general circulation, I have no doubt
whatsoever that Trading Standards and Watchdog would be involved by now.

Hi all.

I have a feeling that on this list, critisim of jaws is almost taboo. =
Well, I'm sorry, but freedom can make a hash of an upgrade like anyone else,
= be they serving a small market or the mainstream. It seems freedom have =
for the most part hashed up v 8 of jaws. If we don't complain, they won't =
fix the problems. I for one can't get v8 to work at all, and I've tried all
sorts of things.
