George I don't think I was actually complaining about progress, although the examples you mentioned caused a great deal of waste which was not very friendly to the environment. What I was saying was that support should not be stopped for older versions just because new ones have been developed. You asked how many users of old operating systems there are. Who knows? I am thinking of the entire globe, not just America and Europe. We are highly privileged compared with many people in the developing countries, and I know there are charities who repair and recondition old computers and send them out to communities who cannot afford new machines. I doubt if they will have up to date software on them. There is also the complexity of the programs to be considered, and the fact that we are not all high fliers in the field of technology. You say you speak from the point of view of a software developer, so I would ask that developers should do a lot more to make life simpler for everyone who has to operate computers. I realise this is not strictly a JAWS topic, but all the screenreader developers must be having to jump through hoops all the time to keep up to date with what is going on in the mainstream. Certainly the newer versions of operating systems for Windows are a vast improvement on the first ones, but many people say that if you can still manage with what you have got, why spend a small fortune continuously upgrading. I have only just bought this PC, and I am certainly not thinking of getting Vista until this PC dies, which I hope will not be for many years. By the way, I still have a 486 running DOS and WordPerfect 5.1. It works fine, and I use it for such things as making labels and keeping information safe. I have no intention of parting with it until it finally gives up the ghost.
