Agreed, and is how I perform my day-to-day and weekly on-site backups,
with a mirror drive in another machine -- i.e. two full sets of backups.

If this is the only backup mecahnism, then it is vulnerable to burglary
or the house burning down.  A removable drive (i.e. in a caddy, as has
been suggested) or additional portable backups (such as on DVDs) taken
off-site is a way to overcome that issue.
