[iyonix-support] Re: iyonix 2 or not

Hi

Having failed to get logged into drobe to respond to something there I thought I'd make a couple of comments here.

Iyonix 2: This would have been rather a nice machine.. dual core cpu etc .. absorbed many months of my design time. Then came the crunch question.. could we make it at a price people would pay, and would enough ACTUALLY pay that price.. rumours have suggested a build cost to a first batch of 10 to 30 machines of between 50 and 100k .. probably not unreasonable at commercial rates, considering the CPU had just under 1500 connections on it and itself would have cost over £100!.. that would mean that sales of several hundred units would be needed at similar costs to the current (almost) standard iyonix.

Would several hundred of you or others actually commit to this.. or would we be left thoroughly out of pocket?

To put it bluntly, we could not make the sums add up! - however hard we tried.

For the future, once the remaining stock of machines is exhausted (<10 first come first served) iyonix will continue to trade, as reported, in spares and accessories.

I shall be around, initially within iyonix, then in my own right, providing support as reasonably required.

Castle continues to license RISCOS as before.. all product work has been undertaken in iyonix in recent times to protect the IP ownership as others have rightly deduced.

So Thank You all for your support over the years.. It has been an iteresting time.

Now to the future.. Do have a look at http://www.ucallusave.co.uk .. this is a part time thing I've been involved with recently that has saved me considerable amounts of money. Recent announcements, which will be will be reflected there tomorrow I'm told, should help further.

A challenge indeed - who would like to get 5% cashback on all their groceries and fuel costs? .. how? .. drop me a line and I'll explain

Many thanks

John

I would love to see an Iyonix 2, using the latest state-of-the-art ARM or XScale processor. It would be important if the new computer could have the speed and performance to capture, edit and save video media (your average Digital TV broadcast size). This could allow for creative hardware and software developers (budding beginners or seasoned developers) to then put this into practice, and it would also attract a larger customer base for those who want an alternative to using Windows based systems which I've found to be somewhat un-reliable at times for such a task. This aside, there are many other functions that can come from a faster system. Digital Camera stills are getting bigger, and at 4MB for a 10Megapixal shot, it's starting to make my trusty Iyonix sweat with the work.

I can see the real headache with building a new system - RiscOS is not mainstream enough to guarantee a customer base in the millions, so that does mean big risk. £1400 is reasonable per unit, but with the current credit crunch, and with one or two people leaving RiscOS for other OS's, it would make sales hard indeed.

Reference www.ucallusave.co.uk (AKA Utility Warehouse). I currently make use of the Mobile service, as does my brother (who also makes use of the landline service). It is as you say worthwhile and has cut my monthly bills in half. The only downside is there's no answer phone service. Still making calls and texts is about all I need.

Many Thanks
