Mouse mat? Optical Mouse? Chalk? Cheese?

A decent optical mouse will work on a sheet of white paper. I have three:
Logitech, Microsoft, and "Made in China" and they all work on everything
I have tried, with one exception.

The only surface ever to cause a problem here (when experimenting) was a
clean mirror. A dusty one worked fine!  :-)
