There are several points when USB is interrogated. Early on, mice and
keyboards connected directly to the Iyonix are checked (e.g. to check if
it's a boot with a shift key held down). Later other directly connected
devices and devices connected to hubs are checked. If USB2 is loaded in
the boot sequence rather than in ROM (5.12/5.13) then they might be
checked again. Applications can also check them. I discovered when
developing !PrintSpool that Belkin mice would often crash when
interrogated so I altered the program to avoid looking at mice.

If you have a mouse that appears to crash then don't touch it until the
boot completes.
