Sounds like an interesting project. However if it was my car my
priority would be getting the car going, so I would use a PC.
I have got a copy of the Ross-Tech software to use with my laptop and
Audi. As I am using the freeware version it won't change many things,
but it does provide interesting information.
Looking at what it is doing, there seems to be scope for doing this
from RISC OS, if the interface driver can be made to work, so I will
watch your progress with interest.
You are probably aware that in the case of Audi, and I suspect many
others, making significant changes requires a logon, which I think is
handled by the unit in the car, rather than the diagnostic software,
so at the least you will need to find out the appropriate code
numbers.
The Audi cables (USB to large serial plug) are available on Ebay from
vendors in the States, at quite reasonable prices. The only difference
for other makes is likely to be the type of plug - and even that may
be standardised.
